Thanks, Club Med!

The 9th of June 2015 marked EnWeave Community’s first group of volunteer’s first day at Club Med.

For context and the benefit of you readers, EnWeave was lucky to be a part of Club Med’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and carry out weaving sessions in conjunction with their Family Nature Fun programme. 


Aside from raising awareness about upcycling, it was also a good opportunity to promote the art of weaving to Club Med guests.

As soon as we arrived Club Med Cherating, Team 1 was greeted by the extremely hospitable staff and especially a man named James, who made sure we were well accommodated. We settled into our rooms in no time as we had help with our luggage and the baskets plus materials we’d brought.

One of the first few things that overwhelmed us was the energy everyone had at this resort, always up and going! We knew it was going to be an exciting week ahead.

True enough, day one of conducting our weaving session, we were delightfully surprised by the response we got from fellow guests at the resort. A lot of people were interested in the session and our pro-poor project that helped disadvantaged ladies. 

The session was conducted by the pool, where laughters were heard as our participants got crafty with their fingers to roll and weave. 





Some of them admitted that it was tedious and required patience and persistence, even though it was just a repetitive process. 

“Up, down, up and down,” you would hear us weaving trainers guiding the Club Med guests with their basket. 


One of the Team 1 weaving trainer was Mali, a retiree volunteer who’d help out with EnWeave’s initiative after she left her corporate job in the financial sector. Everyone agrees that her patience and crafty hands make her a great weaver! Especially with the eager ones who couldn’t wait to finish their baskets, Mali would always diligently help them out.

Nadia, a fellow volunteer who’d just graduated from university was also a weaving trainer with us. She had a swell time teaching the guests!

Club Med was also kind enough to let us display our items at their boutique. The boutique manager, Ashley made sure everything was in place.

During updating Patrick's status to a friend of mine today, Patrick called out from the bed. I looked up to his dancing eyes and smiling face. This would usually put me in smiles. Instead, I watched his face more closely than usual. Much earlier this morning, closer to 2am, his vomit was mixed with blood. He was down with flu and cough since late last week. Surgery On My Baby

The birth of Patrick changed my marriage life from the two of us to the three of us, a family. We were excited, happy, worried followed by all kind of emotions for our baby son. So many things to learn, to experience. Breastfeeding, constant thoughts on our baby's well being especially when his jaundice appeared to rise during his first month. The lacking of sleep. There were moments I observed his breathing while he slept. We were amazed by every new mannerisms that Patrick displayed. We were so charmed when he first smiled to us. I would observed how gently my husband would treat Patrick and how Patrick would looked up to him, listening to his every word. At The Hospital

       When the ambulance finally reached the hospital, I was rolled with a wheelchair to the emergency section. During admission, a lady at the registration asked some questions.            Having answered her questions, she then looked at me and said, “This hospital only accepts burn patients who are burnt 35% and below. Yours looks like 50% and above. I am sorry, we can’t accept you here”. Surprised by her statement, I asked, “Then where should I go?” She replied, “You can ask the ambulance to bring you to any hospital that you want. You can go to Lam Wah Ee Hospital or elsewhere”. Despite the pain and shock, I was lucky that I still had some clarity of mind. “If Penang General Hospital, the biggest hospital in Penang doesn’t want to accept me, which other private hospital would accept me?”, I asked her.   “I still want to be admitted here”, I insisted.
